What you need

  • Lighthouse CI
  • GitHub Actions

When it runs

Each pull request.

Steps

  1. Add the Lighthouse CI GitHub Action to the workflow that runs on each pull request.
  2. Point it at the deploy preview URL your host posts on the pull request, not at production.
  3. Test your three most important pages: homepage, one content page and the checkout or signup page.
  4. Set budgets in lighthouserc.json, for example a minimum accessibility score and a maximum page weight, with some slack.
  5. Make the check fail only when a budget is broken, and post the report link on the pull request.
  6. Review the budgets every few months and tighten them once the site passes comfortably.

AI step

(No AI step.)

Why this usually works

Why it worksIt catches slow or inaccessible pages on the pull request, when the fix is one revert, instead of after customers notice.

What to watch for

Watch forScores vary between runs; run each page three times and use the median, or the check will fail at random.
Watch forA preview behind a login or password will score the login page; give CI a bypass token or a public preview.
